The Drive-thru, a fast and convenient service. Or so you think. Our generation is filled with people who are always on the move. Usually you wont have time to stop in and eat, so the drive-thru was invented. It provided the convenience of staying in your car and getting your food. Although it's not all fun and easy. People often have a short temper.... really short. I have had to deal with the good and bad people.
There are people that can understand a simple mistake, and say "oh it's ok your fine".
Then we got the short tempered cannons that explode for messing one little thing up. These people often will continue to yell and scream at you. It's also partly their fault for the mix up. We get the diesel engine vehicles so that you can't hear their voices, if you ask them to turn off the vehicle, they get upset.
A few months ago I was running for drive-thru (picking up the food and bring it down to the drive-thru) and the person on headset had forgotten to ring up the drinks for his kids meal. we were going to charge him for it. The drinks for kids meals are only a dollar so it would have been only 4 dollars total for the drinks. He was upset and starting to swear at my employees and myself. We were going to just give him the drinks to get him out of the drive-thru to make our line move faster. However he still was upset when we were not going to charge him for the drinks still swearing and yelling at us. He looked like he was going to jump through the window because he was so upset. I didn't know what to do so I got the resturant manager and she took care of the situation.

Hey Nikki,
ReplyDeleteIf I worked at Burger King, more than likely I would be placed into an anger managment course. Some people feel that things should happen right now, when it really isn't possiable. I used to get homeowners, that execpted us to build a $300,000 in a week. It can be done but it would cost them a couple of million, THANKS a lot (Extreme Makeover Home Addition). And to the people with diesel trucks. They can be four cars behind me and I still can't hear the person talking in the drive thru microphone. I would probable get fired at Burger King to, because I would screw their orders up on purpose if they were being JERKS.
Hi Nikki,
ReplyDeleteThis post is as depressing as your last one. I can't believe that people are this obnoxious. Do you sometimes start to lose faith in humanity? What percentage of your customers are totally rotten, do you think? How many are just normal decent people? I'd be curious to hear your thoughts or those of you other people who have worked fast food.
I, of course, work with the public everyday, but frankly, I have all the power in the relationship, so I think that I have a skewed perspective on people. I probably only have at most one student per year whom I don't particularly care for. And really, I'm always amazed by how pleasant and often downright wonderful my students generally are. But since I'm giving them grades, I probably only see their best sides.
I'd also be curious to hear your philosophizing on the concept of the drivethrough window. I loved what you said about how it represents what an on-the-move culture we live in. Go further with that thinking. What else does the drivethru and the people in it say about our culture or our society? In fact, writing this, I realize that even the term "drivethru" (not drivethrough) is shortened and hurried. Interesting.

DeleteIt's hard to be that nice sometimes especially when some people just obviously don't deserve your time. It does show your learning problem solving skills techniques to always try to resolve issues with certain levels of professionalism.
